Approaching the southwest corner of the 7th Street Park this morning to stroll through it, I noticed someone in the park erecting a plastic lawn sign (you know - with the thin metal legs to poke into the soil). I assumed that it would be yet another political sign but was a bit surprised to see that it was something far more deplorable: a two-sided advertisement for window blinds. There was one already up in the southeast corner.I gave the guy a bit of grief for putting his signs up in a public park, to which he shot back: "Hey, I'm just doing my job!" I asked him how long he planned to leave his signs in the park, to which he responded, "I'm not sure." In other words, he won't ever be back to remove them.
He then walked across the park, got into his company van and, presumably, was off to the next place willing to accept a few of his window blind advertisements -- perhaps our waterfront park! I really hope that his job also took him to Promenade Park with dozens of his plastic advertisements!
How many advertisement signs can this van hold, do you suppose? |
But here's the truly impressive thing. The guy parked his van on the Columbia Street side of the park, walked to the Warren Street side of the park with two signs, installed them there but never put any signs up anywhere else, including near Columbia Street. It's like he knew that Hudson's riff raff can only be found in the northern half of the park and that all the monied folk with windows are walking along Warren Street, not Columbia Street. Smart guy -- that blind man is no blind man!
