The "Improved" Stewart's Corner 9 Months Later

There are a few things of interest going on along Green Street near the intersection with Fairview Avenue, also known as the Stewart's corner, several months after "improvements" were made there.

First, many residents now park their cars partially on the sidewalk along Green Street to avoid being swiped by passing vehicles, especially trucks. This was rarely, if ever, the case prior to the "improvements" to the nearby Stewart's corner which were completed last fall. It's difficult to figure out exactly what is going on ever since the double yellow lines were installed in the middle of the street late last year, but my sense is that the newly created traffic lane headed toward Stewart's is too narrow and causing parked cars to be swiped by passing vehicles. Word has probably spread among neighbors that if you don't park with your right wheels on the sidewalk, you will eventually lose a mirror or worse. Vehicles regular speed on this portion of the truck route and, of course, the bend in the street creates additional trouble. Something is wrong if residents feel like they have to park partially on the sidewalk to keep their cars safe. To avoid this, the city should not allow parking on both sides of Green Street in and near the bend.

Code violation and ticketable offense
known as IMPROPER PARKING.  Clearly,
cars are not being ticketed.

Second, you may remember that last year the city decided to extend the original double yellow lines on Green Street west from Stewart's to near the bend in the street.  The contractor installed the short section of double yellow lines in early August and the city finally extended them over 4 weeks later (remember all the cones and barriers for weeks?).  Notice how the contractor's original section of lines in front of Stewart's is still holding up fine over 9 months later, and how the long, added section painted by the city has faded badly after 8 months.  The contractor's paint work is still bright yellow while DPW's is not at all.

Made to last, obviously!

Not DPW's work!
Last but certainly not least, a NO TURN ON RED sign still has not been installed/replaced for vehicles turning off of Fairview onto Green. Too many cars and trucks are taking the right on red, making the intersection more dangerous than it was prior to the "improvements." This issue has been before the council on at least two occasions recently, and HUDseen recently wrote about how ineffectively the council and City Hall are handling the matter. Here is the article, from just over a month ago: I WISH...

Turning right on red is now stupidly allowed and
has been for the past 9 months because
someone forgot to install a sign.  There appears
to be little to no room to add one.  Not to worry,
though, Shane Bower is on it!
