Is Anyone Protecting Our Protectors, Let Alone Us?

Notice all the slippery ICE surrounding both Code Enforcement vehicles parked in their regular spaces this morning out front of the CEO office, nearly two weeks after just 3 or 4 inches of snow fell on Hudson.

You can't make this shit up.

But I did make the following up, and it was not at all difficult:

News Flash:  A Code Enforcement Officer is out of work and out of commission for at least 4 months with a broken ankle, broken elbow and a concussion as a result of slipping on ice that was surrounding the parked city-issued vehicle he was attempting to enter.  He never made it inside the vehicle, but an ambulance did take him to Columbia Memorial Hospital where he will be recuperating for at least 3 days before being sent home.

When asked where the part-time officer was hoping to get to in the vehicle which was parked in the parking lot in front of the CEO office, CEO supervisor Craig Haigh said that he had sent his officer out to investigate a complaint from a resident about a large and long patch of ice one block away on the sidewalk along Prospect Street adjacent to an illegal car repair business.  Mr. Haigh would not comment on why so much ice was surrounding both of the parked city-issued vehicles which he and his officers rely on, nor whether he was at all aware of all of the ice.  "We take ice on sidewalks, in parking lots and other public areas seriously," was all Mr. Haigh would offer.

It lasts snowed in Hudson 13 days ago, dropping 3-4 inches, and any ice found in the city is a result of that snow.

Two weeks after the most recent snowfall,
12 feet of slick ice, now with rain water on top.
We supposedly have a fix for those property owners
who fail to keep their sidewalks clear of debris,
snow, ice and hazards that can injure or kill, especially
those repeat offenders who are much too numerous and
common for a civil society.  It's called the Hudson
Code Enforcement Office, supervised by Craig Haigh,
also known as our Code Enforcment Officer.
Ice completely covering the entire width of 12 feet of city
sidewalk in a residential area for two weeks (and likely
more) NIGHT AND DAY.
What an absolute obscene fucking disgrace!

By the way, when I did enter the CEO offices this morning to let Craig know about the 12 feet of smooth ice covering the Prospect Street sidewalk next to the illegal and unlicensed car repair service that is somehow associated with the West Indies bodega in the 200 block of Warren, I noticed a new face sitting at a desk near Craig's office.  Craig introduced me to his new employee by pointing to me and saying to him, "This is the town idiot I told you about.  Now you know."  The two other (part-time) officers were also busy inside the warm offices doing who knows what.  It seems that we now have four code enforcement officers at CEO, including Craig.  Four old white guys.  (I suppose that one of the two part-timers could be retiring or quitting soon, with the new guy replacing that person).  For as long as I have been around, there were a total of 3 employees at CEO, though I could be mistaken.

Circa 2013

With an additional code officer, look for Hudson (off of most of Warren Street, of course) to finally be a clean, attractive and safe place to live, walk and enjoy in the not-too-distant future.  Just don't hold your breath!

Even when there is no snow or ice on this portion of
of sidewalk of the 500 block of State Street, it is full
of hazards.  It is horrendous. From across the street this
past summer, I saw a man in his 40's or 50's fall here --
and he wasn't even looking at his phone!  He got back up,
cursing like a sailor and pointing at the uneven sidewalk
that put him on his side.  This picture was taken 5 days ago,
more than one week after our most recent snowfall.  Apparently,
this is acceptable to everyone at Code Enforcement,
including the guy in charge, Craig Haigh.

If indeed Craig recently hired that new fellow I saw today at the CEO office, that job position was never posted on the city's JOBS & VOLUNTEER page of the city's website.  NEVER!

The city can't even be bothered to keep its
own public spaces free of ice and snow.  It is
as if they would prefer lawsuits for themselves
and annoyances, ugliness, injury and death for
the rest of us!  (This scene has absolutely nothing
to do with Code Enforcement, and everything to
do with Rob Perry's DPW!)
