How Is This Possible?

This morning, I dropped by the temporary Hudson City Hall on Washington Street to see if, by the slimmest of chances, DPW Superintendent Robert Perry was around to answer a question or two about the mudslide across the street in the lot.  As I expected, Mr. Perry was not available, but one of his DPW clerks was kind enough to at least try to help me get an idea of where he might be.

I began the conversation with the DPW clerk:

Hello.

Hi.

I don't suppose Rob Perry is around, is he?

Why would you think he would be here?

I don't know, this is City Hall, isn't it?

I don't know how many times you have been told that Rob does not work at City Hall.

I know, but sometimes he's here, isn't he?  To check on you, maybe?  He doesn't check up on you or anyone in the DPW office?

Not usually.

Do you know where he would be?

I do not.

If I wanted to knock on his door, where would that be?

There's no door to knock on.  I don't know where he is.

You don't know where he works, or you don't know where he is right now?

I don't know where he is right now.

Where might he be, do you have any idea?

Somewhere in the city, working.

Like in an office?

No, probably not.

And that was the end of my fruitless endeavor.

Alas, I still don't know where our DPW Superintendent has an office that is approachable by residents of Hudson who pay his $114,000 salary.  You know, an office with a chair, desk, phone and maybe a computer.  Maybe even a door to knock on that leads to his office.  We all know he can't work exclusively from his city-issued vehicle.

How is it possible that a clerk for any city department has no idea where their boss' office is located or where that boss can be found?
