According to a similar sign just a few hundred feet away, on the south side of the 500 block of Columbia, parking is allowed for 23 hours, from Thursday morning to Friday morning. This sign is in error. Like the other signs along that side of Columbia in other blocks that have the special Thursday night parking rule, it should read THURS 9 PM, not THURS 9AM. Moreover, parking is never allowed on both sides of our narrow truck route, not in the daytime nor overnight. To encourage parking on both sides at any time of the day or night is dumb. And dangerous.
Even if the sign in the middle were accurate, it still shouldn't be there. |
As I pointed out in a recent article, there are zero signs on the north side of the 500 block of Columbia related to special parking rules. Which is to say, there are no special parking rules on that block, and no one ever has to move their car to the side south side of the street to make way for the street sweeper (and avoid a $15 ticket). But there is one inaccurate sign on the south side of that block designed to handle the cars not expected to move every Thursday night from the north side. The sign indicates that there is a special parking rule on that block, which is 100% untrue. Even if the sign were accurate (PM, not AM), it would be just as completely inaccurate, unhelpful, confusing, and dangerous. Go figure.
At a recent Informal Council meeting, DPW Superintedent Robert Perry had this to say about the installation of signs: "DPW is in the pick 'em up and put 'em in business." How many years ago did his department put this sign in?
