At an Informal Common Council meeting last summer, I asked City Treasurer Heather Campbell how Hudson's short-term rental law was being enforced, ensuring that those people renting out their houses or apartments for the weekend were properly registered with the city, complying with the strict STR regulations, and paying taxes on the rooms rented out. I was told that a company hired by the city was doing the compliance enforcement (though I do not remember the company's name, it is known as a "compliance software company"). Tom Depietro said that everything was fine and that this issue had already discussed in prior meetings. "Next question, please."
Well, apparently the services which the company is being paid for are no longer adequate. According to a recent "article" on the city's website, Hudson is looking to hire someone part-time to handle STR regulation. The article states that a majority of the job will entail "Ensuring STR regulation compliance." Forgive me if I am off base here, but ensuring STR regulation compliance is exactly what the compliance software company has been doing for us for years. Whether the software company will continue alongside the new position is unclear, but it appears to be the case that they will.
I had my suspicions that the city was not doing enough to enforce its short-term rental regulations, and that is why I asked my question of Heather. My suspicions may have been accurate.
Police Chief Ed Moore informed the Common Council last month that a HPD Parking Enforcer had quit and that he had been speaking with "a few good candidates" to fill the available position. Ed said that he was confident one of the candidates would be a good enforcer. That job opening was never posted on the city's website, not even as an "article." One wonders if Ed is still gathering candidates for parking enforcer positions by, as he said months ago, "word of mouth." There is no such thing as a JOB OPPORTUNITIES page on the city's website.
The parking enforcer who recently quit after just one year? He was hired by "word of mouth."
