Fresh on the heels of yesterday's HUDseen article about the wrong way driver on 4th Street and what might solve that common and dangerous problem, this morning I watched in disbelief as a wrong way driver made her way around the City Hall Municipal Parking Lot headed in the wrong direction while completely ignoring all 4 of the new white arrows on the pavement. I did not see which entrance the driver used to enter the lot.
When I took the picture of the white van in the northwest corner of the lot, the driver had just come around the turn, having already driven at least halfway around the lot in the wrong direction while driving over at least 3 of the new white arrows pointing in the opposite direction she was driving. She then pulled into a permit only space and pulled back out immediately.
Continuing her search, she drove over the 2 arrows on the north side of the lot, continued to drive in the wrong direction around the sharp 180 degree turn at the east end (her second or third turn!) where there is room for only one vehicle, then drove over another arrow pointing at her before finally settling on a space beyond the lot's south entrance along the alley. In her wrong way search, she drove over each of the four new arrows once, and possibly twice over one or two of them (though it could have been more, depending on where she entered the lot).
When she did finally try to park her car in her chosen space, she had to do a few backs and forths to be able to enter an angled space meant for drivers in vehicles headed east, not west. Why was it so difficult for her to park in the available space? Because she was a horrible driver who had just driven around the entire parking lot looking for a parking space while knowingly headed in the wrong fucking direction, ignoring every bright week-old white arrow which she approached and drove over. That's why!
