This afternoon in the rain, as I was approaching 4th Street while bicycling up Cherry Alley (approaching the post office), I looked left only to see a car approaching in the direction one is not accustomed to or comfortable with. After stopping, I twice yelled, "WRONG WAY!" as the car passed me. Had I not stopped, we would have met in the middle of 4th Street.
The male driver slowed down in front of the post office on his way to Union, then I heard a loud "Sorry, I didn't know" from him through his open window. As I followed and snapped a quick photo, he took a right as a driver turned off of Union onto 4th honked at him. The errant driver immediately parked on Union, got out of his car and explained to me as I gave him the evil eye, "I don't know my way around here," as if that were an excuse to head the wrong way down a one-way street, passing two ONE WAY signs along the way. Would he have said the same thing to a cop if one had pulled him over?
I continued on, having dodged another bullet.
We NEED large white arrows on the surfaces of our one-way streets! Why are there no large white arrows on the surfaces of our one-way streets preventing drivers from heading the wrong way on them? The ONE WAY signs are clearly not at all sufficient!
Arrows are needed on all of our one-way streets where they intersect with alleys and at intersections where vehicles are NOT TO TURN! DPW should use paint instead of decals so that it won't cost us half a million fucking dollars!
