The story goes that when Hudson was a bustling industrial town (with a population of like twice what we have now), there was a tavern on every corner. (And a bordello on every block.) Here in the 21st century, though, alcohol seems to be down (but not out), while coffee is the new king.
Just today or yesterday, a new fancy coffee joint opened up in the 500 block of Warren nearly directly across the street from the popular Supernatural Coffee & Bakery shop. I, for one, am glad to see that the window and door of the long vacant storefront that once held the 5-Star bodega are no longer coved in paper. But another coffee place? Will Rev even bother to reopen?
Then there's the caffeine dispensary that may open on upper Columbia Street, a stone's throw from the city's most popular coffee joint at the other end of Park Place. Maybe all these coffee options will start a Hudson coffee war and bring the price of a cup of joe down just a bit. (I wish a pint of beer war would begin soon!)During this past Tuesday's regular common council meeting, first ward council member (and its most vocal member), Henry Haddad, brought up the issue of the Pocketbook Hudson Hotel & Baths & Nightclub's planned musical event next Saturday night featuring several artists from New York City. The event is being advertised as beginning at 11pm and ending at 3 am (though in less direct terms. Read on.). They call their nightclub ETHER HUDSON, and it can be accessed most easily on the Prospect Street side of the sprawling Pocketbook business complex, whose address is 549 Washington Street. Prospect, Washington and all streets nearby are, of course, primarily residential streets. Quiet, residential streets ideal for raising a family, enjoying the American Dream and, perhaps most importantly, easily parking on anytime of the day or night never far from your front door. At least those streets used to be all of those things (and so much more), that is, before the beast along one block of North 6th came to town last year.
Who the hell advertises the hours of a musical event as "22:00 - 03:00" unless their intention is to disguise the fact that music will be blaring until 3:00 am on a Sunday morning in a residential area?
Henry began his comments on, and approach to, the unwelcome situation at the Pocketbook (which I informed him of) with this: "The history of Hudson with nightlife has been difficult in the last several decades up until the last 8 or 9 years... We don't have nearly as many of the gun incidents as we used to, especially around alcohol. And we have far less drug related incidents, especially around alcohol."
Vive le COFFEE!
