Don't We Deserve A Whole Lot Better Than F'ng Plastic?

Doesn't our one and only planet deserve better than plastic?

Five 16-inch disposable plastic zip ties for
one NO PARKING sign posted for 24 hours.

It shouldn't be forgotten that two years ago our $125,000 DPW Superintendent, Robert W. Perry, Jr., decided on his own to purchase several plastic trash receptacles to replace the wooden receptacles he got tired of having his workers maintain.  Plastic.  Not wood.  Not metal.  Fucking plastic, among the worst of the many scourges in this age of too much throwaway stuff made from petroleum.

(Can't you just see a new DPW Superintendent in 10 or 20 years asking the question, "Who decided to buy these plastic shit trash receptacles that we can't fix or maintain?  What the hell were they thinking?  These things cost $2,000 now!"  Of course you can!)

Perry purchased 9 of the plastic receptacles without getting the approval of the common council or anyone at City Hall, and each one cost city taxpayers exactly $1,030.  WE PAID NEARLY TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR 9 TRASH RECEPTACLES MADE OF PLASTIC.

Why would Rob Perry be expected to ask for approval to purchase such "cheap" plastic things that change the character of Warren Street?  Why would he bother?  Do you think Lola Roberts cares if the city's public trash receptacles are made of wood, metal, or plastic?  Does she care what they look like or how long they last?  Does she care that plastic trash receptacles can't be maintained and that they must eventually be thrown away?  How about Dominic Merante -- does he care what our public trash receptacles look like?  Does Rich Volo care what our public trash receptacles look like, how much they cost, or how much plastic crap Rob Perry buys?  Does Rich Volo care that DPW (Rob Perry!) stopped maintaining the longtime wooden trash receptacles that have lent a certain charm and dignity to downtown Hudson for decades so that we can have fucking plastic receptacles instead?  How about Margaret Morris, Henry Haddad, Gary Purnhagen, Mohammed Rony, and Claire Cousin?  Do you suppose any of them care that Rob Perry never asked for approval or informed anyone that he was planning on purchasing plastic trash receptacles or the plastic "support" things you see in the pictures I took last night after they fell to the ground in a slight breeze?  Or does the entire common council give Rob Perry carte blanche, allowing him to make changes to and purchase whatever he wants, even if it means filling Hudson, our eyes, and our landfills with more and more fucking plastic crap?

The public trash receptacle closest to Rich Volo's
heart and home.  At least it's not made of plastic!
It's holding up quite well to the abuse, thank you!

Don't we deserve better than a slob addicted to plastic who seems to do whatever he wants, and a common council that doesn't care about much of anything that affects Hudson residents?

By the way, the Jeep parked on Columbia at 6th in the lead picture taken early last evening was ticketed early this morning, as were 3 cars parked behind it!  Last night, with the help of plastic zip ties and paper signs on plenty of ugly plastic crap, DPW made their annual effort to get parked cars off of a few blocks of the north side of Columbia Street so that it could be swept properly of all the debris that Rob Perry diligently tries to keep out of his precious sewer system we all rely on.  However, plenty of people had left their cars parked in the DPW street sweeper's way early this morning -- either not aware of the signs, not able to see them, or ignoring them -- preventing DPW from making a successful, efficient, and thorough sweep of all the crap that accumulates along the curb of the truck route, the stuff Rob Perry calls GRIT. Is this really how Rob Perry and his foreman get things done properly?  The DPW crew made all that effort -- all those signs, with all that plastic, including dozens or hundreds of zip ties, and all that time, money and gasoline -- to be able to clear debris from the street and yet cars were still parked among the NO PARKING signs flat on the ground that had fallen over in the breeze!  Bad Car!  We clearly warned you! You deserve a $25 NO PARKING ZONE ticket!  Isn't it obvious that the mayor's office, DPW, and HPD are addicted to the revenue that parking tickets produce and would rather ticket cars than actually sweep the streets of debris properly so that our sewer system doesn't fail us and need to be replaced.  Oh, wait, it already has!  Never mind!

If you look closely at the picture above, you will notice two fascinating and telling things about how the city operates like a well-oiled machine.  Not only did the paper NO PARKING notice (with date and time!) fall off the wooden sign to the ground AND THE CARS WERE STILL TICKETED, but the wooden sign is secured to Rob Perry's plastic "support" with one 15-cent disposable plastic zip tie.  Sloppiness, money, and plastic -- they can't get enough of it!

Has Rob Perry been checked out for a while?
Has he received his 4% longevity raise yet this year?
