I came upon this accident scene a bit late, but according to an HPD Officer, a tractor trailer headed east on Columbia Street attempted to turn left on 4th, its tail clipping the utility pole at the southwest corner. Notice how the entire above-ground portion of the pole was simply shoved about two feet away by the force of the truck. Sheared off, moved, yet still standing, thanks to the wires attached to its top.
If it was a tractor trailer that caused this mess for National Grid and, possibly, DPW, why on earth did the driver turn off of the truck route and onto 4th? Also, was he or she ticketed for leaving the route?
The next morning: The amount of effort, the number of trucks and equipment, the manpower (National Grid, Verizon, a contractor or two, and who knows else, maybe Hudson Cable) and the time that went into replacing the wooden utility pole last night was obscene. Look at all the wires and cables and the light that needed to be removed from the old pole and secured to the new pole. BECAUSE A TRACTOR TRAILER TRAVELING THROUGH DOWNTOWN HUDSON TOOK A TURN OFF OF THE TRUCK ROUTE WHEN IT SHOULD NOT HAVE.
Notice also that there are no signs at the intersection letting truck drivers know that THEY ARE NOT TO TURN ON TO 4TH STREET.
