Sad News For Local Peach Lovers

Today at the Hudson Farmers Market, as I was paying for my apples and potatoes from Samascott, I asked the worker how things were going at the farm.  "Well," he said, "it looks like we won't have any peaches this year.  You probably won't see any in our stall this year."

It turns out that the warm weather we had last month allowed Samascott's peach trees to blossom, only to be killed by the freeze that soon followed.  The erratic, unpredictable, global warming weather is a big problem for our local food providers.   There likely won't any local peaches this year, and some farms and orchards will suffer financially.  I didn't ask about the viability of other stone fruits often seen at the market, such as cherries and nectarines, among others.  Let's hope they hold on!

On the positive side, the friendly famer told me that their apple trees have yet to blossom, so things should be fine for, in my estimation, Columbia County's finest agricultural crop.  Let's hope so.  (Our corn ain't bad, either!)
