There was a terrific two-car crash near the intersection of 1st and Columbia today at about 5:00 that drew lots of spectators, as well as 3 fire engines (including one from Greenport), 2 HPD cruisers, a Greenport Rescue vehicle and several other emergency vehicles. There was no fire of any sort, just two bashed up vehicles that were certainly totaled.

Bent axle: TOTAL! |
According to what I overheard at the scene of the crash, the silver car flipped, winding up on its wheels again, after the driver failed to avoid hitting the black car as it was making a u-turn in the street. Apparently, the sound of the impact was really loud. From the looks of things, including gouges in the pavement and on the curb, the silver car must have been travelling well above the speed limit. The driver of the speedy car, whom I saw, was taken to the hospital -- he appeared to have neck or back pain. His air bags probably kept him from serious injury. The other driver was fine.
One tow truck driver, with his own broom and dustpan, swept up the mess from around where the silver car came to a rest, while the other tow truck driver did nothing of the sort, leaving all sorts of small debris in the street, including glass. Tow drivers are required by NY State law to clean up the mess before they leave.
When you think of what a car accident at 1st and Columbia might entail or result in, a car flipping and both cars being totaled there isn't easy to imagine unless at least one car was driving way too fast. The sounds and sights of speeding vehicles (including motorcycles) is only worsening and has gotten entirely out of control, if you will. When will this madness stop?
