BUMP? You Call That A BUMP? Are You Sure It's Not ROB PERRY'S SPECIAL LUMPY ASPHALT PUDDING!

DPW's wonderful patch job at 4th & Columbia appeared in mid-December.  (Read about it here: DPW At Their Best).  The BUMP sign appeared sometime last week in the warmth because the patch turned to dangerous wavy goo, as it still is.  It's a notoriously crash-prone intersection, made worse by DPW's horrendous gelatinous asphalt patch job installed 3 months ago and now with the addition of a huge sign making the already narrow truck route narrower.  This is the ultimate in shitshowness.   Welcome to Hudson.

Sometimes I wonder how Hudson can still be functioning.

Unless you walk on it, drive or ride over it, or stand
near it, it's difficult to convey just how bad a situation
exists there and what a horrible patch job DPW left us
3 months ago.

If you try to coast over this "asphalt" patch
on a bicycle, you will literally come to a stop,
with both wheels digging into the goo.

DPW's second attempt to get their patch job right likely won't happen anytime soon because they've got their hands full with three sewer issues under two of the streets in the Boulevards neighborhood, one on Oakwood and two on Parkwood.  The west sidewalk at the bend in Parkwood has been taped off for several months and now that street has been closed to traffic from Glenwood to Oakwood since Monday.  Two Parkwood residents recently told me they were angry about the situation because no one from the city gave them a heads up about the disruptions or even to tell them what the hell was going on or how long the work would last.  Typical Rob Perry.  What a swell guy!

The three excavated sites (all being worked on by DPW, with no outside contractors involved, as far as I can tell) seem to be associated with a major ($$$) sewer repair project, but do you think our 117,000-dollar man mentioned anything about it during his report to the council at Monday's informal meeting, or at any previous meetings?  Why would he bother?  What the hell does the council care about what DPW is doing with their time and our money?  Why would council members Dominic Merante and Vicky Daskaloudi care how many streets are closed in their ward this week and how long DPW will be working on the project?  Last month Perry mentioned something about a sinkhole near the closed sidewalk on Parkwood after his report was finished only because Vicky asked him about it (after I urged her to!).  That was all he needed to bother with.  Nothing this month!  Such a consummate professional we have leading the DPW!

Will the asphalt pudding be applied this week or next
when the sewer is repaired and the hold filled in?

How do you suppose things look under this drain?

There is a reason that the bowl-like portion
of Oakwood between Paddock and Parkwood has been
such a bumpy, ugly patched mess for so long. The ancient
sewer below is an absolute mess.  Water Department
employees seen here patching a pipe this morning.

Another Boulevard closed to traffic in the
5th ward.

Work happening below Parkwood, directly between the
two other projects.  One of these workers can sometimes be
found collecting garbage and recycling for the DPW sanitation crew.

What else is Rob Perry not bothering to tell the council and the public about that his department has been, or will be, up to and spending our money on?

Ever Wonder Why...

... our DPW spends so much time and money repairing broken sewer pipes and maintaining the sewer plant on Dock Street?  Certainly there are ...
