A posting in late January on the Hudson Police Department's Facebook page (I held my nose!) offers this: "Join us in congratulating HPD's newest member, Officer Hoose! Welcome to the family. And that was the extent of the announcement, other than 4 pictures, 3 showing Officer Hoose with his happy family, and one with a satisfied-looking young recruit looming over a beaming uniformed Chief Mishanda Franklin at Hoose's side at the New York State Zone 5 Regional Law Enforcement Training Academy, wherever that is. (They don't come to us; we have to go get them and bring them back to Hudson!). Mishanda looks to be so proud of her accomplishment.
If Mishanda was so proud of her department's ability to attract a fresh recruit to Hudson -- which has been no small feat for police department's large and small for the past several years and which will only worsen in the future -- why didn't she bother to proudly, or even offhandedly, mention anything about Officer Hoose to the council and the public during her one and half minute HPD report at February's informal common council meeting which occurred 9 days after the HPD Fakebook posting announcing the great news of Hoose's arrival to HPD? Had Mishanda already forgotten about her newest cop in less than 2 weeks, or did Officer Hoose cut loose within a few days of being a Hudson cop, maybe getting out of town with former cop Luis Martinez, whose final day after a year and a half at HPD was, I believe, on the last day of January and the day after the Fakebook posting about the new cop arriving? Have you seen Officer Hoose around town the past two months?
Speaking of former HPD officer Martinez, why is it that our Police Chief failed to inform the council that one of her officers (he was HPD's best, in my opinion!) had recently quit (asked to resign?) after being here just one and a half years? Was that too awkward a situation for her to try to explain? Does she need a few months or more to think about how to announce Martinez's departure to the council and the public? Or does Mishanda feel that no one outside of HPD needs to know about a cop deciding to leave her department for good after less than two years of service to Hudson? Why let the council and public know if cops are quitting if the police chief isn't going to formally announce that cops are arriving? One cop out, one replacement cop in -- everything's fine! It's all so creepy!

A common posting on HPD's Fakebook page, but recruitment and departure of cops is not an issue our police chief is interested in discussing with the council. |
According to November's HPD Incidents By Type report, there was one shooting in the city that month (referred to as "shots fired"). During December's HPD report to the council, Mishanda did not mention that shooting. Why would she? I looked on the HPD Fakebook site but couldn't find any mention of a recent shooting or shootings. On the report's list there were also 8 larcenies, 5 assaults, 5 frauds, 18 domestic disputes and a bunch of other interesting and concerning issues that Mishanda ignored during her report. The HPD report is supposed to inform the council and the public what the department has been up to the previous month!

After less than 2 years at HPD, gone and already forgotten about. Makes you wonder why, doesn't it? Mishanda Franklin would rather keep mum about this officer leaving HPD so soon after joining. But why? |
