No, Not So Lucky!

HUDseen posted an article on February 26th about the major excavation and gas tank replacement project going on at Lucky's gas station and convenience mart at 718 Columbia Street.  Within 6 weeks of that post, the station had a new paved surface - both asphalt and concrete -- and new pumps.  And, to my surprise, we got a much-needed new sidewalk out front.

The sidewalk is still looking and feeling fine, but I'm not too optimistic that it will hold up much longer.  That's because, after less than three months, the asphalt surface on the property is already starting to fail.  At least three areas have long cracks, a sure sign that what is below is not supporting the asphalt.  Someone f'd up, and they f'd up BADLY!

There were two things at the time that made me skeptical of the quality of the work the contractor was providing to our local independent gas and beer station (I did a bit of observing, if only because I had a hunch).  First of all -- they repaved in the cold and while it was raining.  Second, the contractor (whose name may have been Gallivan) seemed like a real rag tag bunch that I wouldn't have trusted with filling a pothole.  Let's just say that I was not impressed.  I imagine that the station owner, Lucky, is not impressed with what he paid for, either!

Why was the square of wood left secured to the new
concrete sidewalk directly at the end of the crosswalk?!
Because someone didn't know what they were doing?!
